Hirsch Summary
Parents, during their daughter's severe illness, vowed to marry her to a Torah-knowledgeable Cohen. When the father embarked on a sea voyage, he empowered his wife to act in his name. In the father's absence, the wife married their daughter to Cohen A. Unaware of this, the man overseas performed Kidushin for the daughter with Cohen B and brought her home. Abraham ben Jacob de Salomo de Meza infers from the father's conduct that the authority was intended only for business matters and not for the marriage of the daughter. Therefore, only the marriage with B is legally valid. As for the further question of whether the girl, if she had needed a divorce document - thus, no longer being able to marry a Cohen - could have married another man, a non-Cohen, de Meza affirms. (see 623).
