Hirsch Summary
Someone in a family had maintained the tradition for 40 years that, on Hanukkah evenings, all family members would gather at nightfall. Together, they lit the candles and spent the evenings eating and drinking, but also studying the Torah and recounting the miracles of God related to the festival. On one occasion, when a visiting Torah scholar was present, he declared the custom pointless and claimed it could be abolished without needing to formally annul the vow that had arisen from the long-standing practice. Moses Alvarez, however, completely disagreed with the scholar's opinion; he strongly recommended preserving the beautiful custom. However, if the family found it impossible to continue, the vow would need to be properly annulled. See 137.
