Together, they lit the candles and spent the evenings eating and drinking, but also studying the Torah and recounting the miracles of God related to the festival. On one occasion, when a visiting Torah scholar was present, he declared the custom pointless and claimed it could be abolished without needing to formally annul the vow that had arisen from the long-standing practice. Moses Alvares, however, completely disagreed with the scholar's opinion; he strongly recommended preserving the beautiful custom.
