Hirsch Summary
A found a golden earring on the street. A non-Jew offered him a florin for it. A refused the offer and went to a goldsmith, who also valued the earring at a florin. Subsequently, A sold the item to B. B later discovered at home that it was not gold but gold-plated brass and demanded the purchase price back from A. A declined and referred B to the goldsmith. Joseph b. Moses Alvares orders the goldsmith to compensate, because even if he gave his assessment for free, he should have conducted a gold test using the touchstone. See No. 47.
