Hirsch Summary
A person, whose firstborn son had been born during the week of the 9th of Av, and thus should have undergone his redemption (Pidyon haBen) during that week, lost his father. He inquired whether he should wait with the redemption until after the 9th of Av and the week of mourning for his father. He doubted whether he could recite the blessing "over the new" during this time, as he believed this religious obligation did not hold the same status as the commandment of circumcision, for which the father would always recite the blessing. (In the German rite, the blessing is not recited at circumcision.) David ben Raphael Meldola ruled that the father could, despite his doubts, recite the mentioned blessing, but he should not host a feast in celebration. Meldola referenced his own essay on the blessing, noting relevant details. See also Case No. 455.
