Someone vowed, when his ship was overdue, 4,000 florins as a dowry for an orphan girl. The ship returned safely. When he himself became engaged to his niece, an orphan, he inquired whether fulfilling his vow meant giving her the money. Samuel b. Salomo a Catan denied this but allowed the vow to be released.
