Hirsch Summary
Inquiry of Jacob ben Abraham Bassan: A man whose wife was in the third month of pregnancy made the following vow: "If my wife gives birth to a child, I will donate 2000 florins to the Ez Chajim if it is a boy, and 1000 florins if it is a girl." The wife gave birth to a girl; since the man had initially spoken of "a child," he was unclear about what he was required to give. Jonah Abarbanel decides that he only has to pay 1000 florins. If twins had been born, he would have had to follow the gender of the first-born child. If the child had been a hermaphrodite or sexless, the vow would have been null and void.
