Hirsch Summary
Inquiry from Joshua de Cordova to Judah Piza: In a community, it was the custom that every shochet had to present the slaughter knife to the chacham for inspection before use. If this was not done, the animal was considered non-kosher. The chacham had exempted a particularly trustworthy shochet, A, from this obligation. After the chacham's death, a scholar, B, was appointed to make decisions regarding kosher and non-kosher matters until a new chacham arrived. B required A to show him the knife according to the custom. A continued to slaughter without showing the knife. B then declared all animals slaughtered by A as non-kosher. A contested this decision, arguing that B was not the local rabbi. Judah Piza decides that A is obliged to show the knife to B.
