Hirsch Summary
A widow who had lost her ketubah (marriage contract) claimed that she had brought into the marriage 6,000 florins worth of dowry items, such as clothing, jewelry, and linens, but only 5,000 florins worth of these items remained. She therefore demanded 1,000 florins in cash from the estate, which was to be distributed among her two daughters, the only heirs. The adult daughter confirmed the mother's statement, while the Beth Din (Jewish court) ruled that the minor daughter would only be entitled to receive her share of the dowry in cash once she reached maturity. If the older daughter confirmed the mother's claim, this would mean she had to give half of the dowry and half of the claimed cash amount. Samuel b. Solomon a'Cathan confirmed the Beth Din's decision. See also 552 (and 187)
