Hirsch Summary
On the occasion of a girl's birth, the father wanted to examine a rose wreath that one of the guests had. The guest said, 'I'm giving it to you only as a Kiddushin (betrothal) gift for your daughter.' The father replied, 'Give it here!' When leaving, the father returned the rose wreath without further discussion. Many years later, when the girl came of age, she got married. Some people remembered the old incident and reported it to the Beth-Din (rabbinical court). Initially, the father dismissed the incident as a harmless joke. However, Chija Cohen de Lara ruled that if the Kiddushin had been given with another object, the original marriage would have been valid. But because the rose wreath was associated with a foreign cult, and one could not derive benefit from it, the original marriage was invalid.
