Is it permissible to call a levi to the second aliyah when by mistake they overlooked to call him to the first aliyah instead of a cohen and he is embarrassed?

In a congregation there is a set custom to call a levi in place of a cohen when there is no cohen present. and now it happened on a sabbath when there was no cohen present, and they thought there was also no levi present, and they called an israel in place of a cohen. after they started to read the Torah they realized their mistake, and the levi is standing embarrassed. They ask if it is permissible to call the levi next to spare him the embarrassment.
