Hirsch Summary
Query from Joseph ben Moses Alvares: If there is no non-Jew available to trim the wick of the Sabbath lamp, it is customary to bring a piece of bread to the wick to prevent the wick from falling and burning a hole in the tablecloth, and also to prevent the flame from burning too large. Is this permissible? Samuel Mendes de Sola considers the procedure to be allowed.
