Hirsch Summary
A merchant had to go on a long business trip overseas. A trustee undertook to provide for the maintenance of his wife and children in the meantime. During settlement, the merchant objected to the expenses for his son's Bar Mitzvah celebration (clothes, feast, synagogue donations, etc.). The celebration could have waited until his return. The trustee argued that the celebration was part of the dignified life, and he had to pay the expenses as directed. Joseph ben Moses Alvarez decides that the merchant must pay all the expenses but only as much for the feast as he would have spent himself.
