Hirsch Summary
A and B embarked on a sea journey together. After some time, news spread that they had been captured by pirates at sea on the 1st of Nisan and taken into slavery. Upon hearing this, C, a friend of both, raised money to ransom them. He immediately handed over the sum to D, who was supposed to carry out the redemption. However, D had the money stolen from him due to negligence while en route. Meanwhile, a letter dated 1st of Iyar arrived from A and B, stating that they were not captured but were indeed well. However, on the 1st of Tammuz, a new letter arrived, stating that they were captured by ship on the 1st of Sivan. C then demanded compensation from D to ransom their friends. Samuel Mendes de Sola condemns D to make the payment. See No. 180, which bears a striking resemblance to the wording of the inquiry.
