Hirsch Summary
Two merchants from Amsterdam traveled together to a trade fair. One lent the other 200 florins, which the debtor intended to repay immediately upon arrival at the fair; if he failed to keep his word, he would give 10 florins to charity. The creditor demanded his money in the morning, but the debtor allegedly needed to secure his goods first, and after a few hours, he had another excuse. Thus, the money was only paid late in the afternoon. Nevertheless, Samuel ben Salomo a'Cathan absolved the debtor from the obligation to pay the contractual penalty.
