Hirsch Summary
A father gave his son-in-law a dowry of 10,000 florins and further committed to pay 2000 florins annually for 5 years, totaling 20,000 florins. If his daughter died without leaving children, half of the dowry, thus 10,000 florins, should be refunded to him. The wife died after two years without children. Her father now demanded 7000 florins back. However, the son-in-law demanded that the father-in-law continue to pay him 2000 florins annually for three more years, after which he would return 10,000 florins to him. If the father-in-law did not agree, he would only repay 4000 florins. Samuel ben Salomo a Catan ruled that the son-in-law should repay 7000 florins; he had no claim to further installments.
