A twenty-five-year-old widow was married to her deceased husband's younger brother. When he came of age, he demanded a large sum of money in exchange for performing halitza (the ritual release) rather than yibbum (levirate marriage). When the sum was agreed upon, he demanded even more. The woman's relatives reported the situation, and the young man was imprisoned and released only after performing halitza. Abraham Fernandez confirmed the legal validity of this action. See also 477.
