Question Summary
May a person ask non-Jews to reap their produce on the Sabbath in order to meet his commercial commitment to supply soldiers during wartime, and not face ruin?
Question Full
During wartime there was a Jewish businessman who took it upon himself to sell vegetables to the entire camp, with the condition that if he would not deliver on the appointed day all the vegetables needed by the soldiers then he would not be able to cover his expenditures. And every Friday every farmer brings the produce from his field. And after doing this for some months it turns out that for some reason all the collected vegetables in the field were ruined and lost. The Jew now asks if he can ask the other farmers to reap vegetables on the Sabbath and send them to him from other far off fields in order that he not lose all his money.
