Hirsch Summary
In the' Mishneh Torah' of Maimonides,' Hilchot Tefillin, Chapter 1, '§6 and '§7, , there are two readings: according to one, the flesh side of the split parchment is called' Doxofilos' and the hair side is called' Kalaf, while according to the other, it is the reverse. Since' Kalaf' may only be used for Tefillin, and' Doxofilos' may only be used for Mezuzot, clarification is requested as to which reading should be followed. Samuel Mendez de Sola rules that' Gavil' (unsplit parchment) may be used on the hair side for Torah scrolls and Mezuzot.' Doxofilos, the outer side of the split parchment, is for Mezuzot and should be written on the hair side.' Kalaf, the inner side, is to be written on the hair side and may be used for Torah scrolls, Tefillin, and Mezuzot.
