David de Pinto: A very distinguished man took a second wife in his old age, who was only 20 years old and of extraordinary beauty. The husband stipulated in his will that the wife should receive, in addition to the ketubah, 200,000 florins as a gift if he died without having a child by her. The wife gave birth to a son 8 months after the husband's death. Juda Piza thoroughly investigates the reasons that might have led the deceased to impose such conditions on the gift. He assumes that the deceased feared the young woman might deceive him and present a child born of adultery as his own. Therefore, he imposed this "golden chain" on her. However, had he lived to see that his young wife gave him a legitimate child, he would undoubtedly have bequeathed the 200,000 florins to her unconditionally. Thus, Piza awards the amount to the wife.
