A wanted to return to Judaism and therefore emigrate; however, his brother B wanted to stay in Portugal, as he claimed he could not practice his profession elsewhere. He also thought it would be suspicious and therefore dangerous for him if he were to sell his house. In order to persuade him to flee together, A promised to compensate B for the loss of his profession and house and to support him and his family until B could manage on his own. A issued a promissory note to his brother for this purpose. Later, after the migration, A stopped these payments. The promise of repayment is null and void. Abraham ben Jacob de Meza agrees with A. But if B is motivated by a greedy disposition for money-and that alone, not out of reverence for God as the true reason for leaving Portugal-then A would support him out of charitable consideration. It is noteworthy typographically that the last one and a quarter columns are printed in a smaller type.
