Although her husband kept the ornament at home, using it for adorning the Torah scroll during synagogue services, the widow still needed to collect an additional amount for her ketubah. However, the heirs refused payment, claiming that (1) she was not authorized to sell the ornament and (2) she sold it at its silver value. Physician David ben Jacob de Meza ruled that the widow was obligated to return either this ornament or another one to the synagogue. The heirs' obligation toward her remained intact.
