Title A name given to the resource 1762/07 - David ben Raphael Meldola Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 1762 PEH Responsa Hirsch Summary Inquiry from Solomon Jessurun: The son of a poor man was to be circumcised on the 10th of Av, the day on which the fasting of the 9th of Av was postponed that year. A mohel offered the man a ducat for the circumcision (because it absolves him from the fast). When another man, a Torah scholar, heard of this, he offered two ducats. The father then chose the scholar as the mohel. There arose a dispute about whether this procedure was permissible and whether it was consistent with the dignity of a scholar. David ben Raphael Meldola finds nothing objectionable in the behavior of the scholar but praises his zeal and willingness to help the poor.
