<text>Moses Ledesma presents the following inquiry from Jacob ben Abraham Teixeira de Mattos: Can Jews purchase a usable Torah scroll at an auction on the Sabbath through a non-Jewish broker? What if it is uncertain whether the scroll was written by a Jew or a non-Jew? Samuel ben Samuel a'Cathan permits the purchase of the Torah scroll; ideally, the broker should not disclose the name of the Jewish buyer. The second question is relevant only in the context of whether the scroll should be buried if it was written by a non-Jew. For further reference, see responses 174 and 877.</text>
