The daughter, despite repeated pleas, refused to marry because she didn't want to leave her father. In his will, the father bequeathed 3000 guilders as a legacy for the dowry of a suitable bride. This amount was handed over to the treasurer of the association for the dowries of brides. The remaining estate was bequeathed to his sons. After the father's death, the daughter, now decided to marry, demanded a suitable dowry from her brothers. The brothers rejected this request, firstly because the will did not mention it, and secondly because the paternal estate was lost. Likewise, when the girl approached the association seeking to claim the legacy, they also refused to give her the money. They justified this by stating that their father, when making the will, surely didn't have her in mind. Samuel ben Salomo a'Cathan ruled that the brothers should provide a suitable dowry to the best of their ability, either from the paternal estate, despite a potentially damaging sale of property, or from their own resources. However, if they had nothing or not enough, the daughter was entitled to her father's legacy.
