D verbally guaranteed the debts of both B and C, which temporarily satisfied A. Some time later, D sent 2,000 florins to A through B. When A later approached D to pay the remaining balance, D referred him back to B and C, stating that he was no longer on such good terms with them that it would embarrass him if they were pressured. B was only willing to pay 1,000 florins, while C refused to pay anything, each claiming that the money sent had been for their own debt. Samuel ben Solomon of a'Cathan ruled that if D's intention regarding who the payment was for could not be determined, then 1,500 florins should be credited towards B's debt and 500 florins towards C's.
