Later, his wife inherited her mother's dowry, amounting to 2,000 florins. The mother had stipulated that if the daughter died childless, her maternal uncle B would inherit the 2,000 florins. The daughter's ketubah (marriage contract) was in the style of Toledo. When A's wife passed away without children, B demanded not only the 2,000 florins from the mother's estate but also half of the proselyte's estate, which effectively meant half of his niece's dowry. Abraham da Costa Abendana considers A's claims stronger than B's, especially since A is in possession of the property. See reference 874.</text>

<text>A gave his wife a conditional divorce document before embarking on a long sea voyage. The condition was that the divorce would be valid if he did not return by the New Moon of Adar. Since it was a leap year, A did not return on the New Moon of Adar I. During that month, his wife married B. At the end of the month, A returned home. The question arises: should the divorce document's effective date be the first day of Adar I or Adar II? Isaac ben Salomo Saruco distinguishes whether A knew at the time of drafting the divorce document that it was a leap year or not. If he did not know, the divorce document would be valid; if he did know, the legal situation becomes uncertain. In the latter case, the woman would need to be divorced by both men, and any child she might have with B would be considered a mamzer (a child born from an illicit relationship) in case of doubt. 37 A man lived apart from his wife for many years in another country. The wife urged him to return home or send her the divorce document. The man sent her the document with the condition that she would waive her rights in the ketubah in writing. While the wife hesitated, the man passed away. She then gave the receipt to the heirs. However, her brother-in-law, who desired levirate marriage with her, considered the receipt late and thus deemed the divorce document ineffective.</text>

<text>Request by Benjamin Dias Brandon: A wealthy man, Mr. A, had no children with his wife. He often expressed in front of witnesses that he wished to have wealth to leave to the children from his wife's previous marriage. When his brother passed away, Mr. A, who was ill, decided that his wife's children should inherit his brother's share. After Mr. A's death, the surviving third brother denied the validity of this arrangement. Dr. Aron Ledesma supports his claim. The stepsons could not receive their stepfather's wealth under the title of 'inheritance,' but rather under a different title. According to Jewish law, only someone who is legally entitled to inherit can receive it. See reference 511.</text>

The son demanded a double share as the firstborn. However, the daughter contested this claim, arguing that their parents had lived among non-Jews and were only married according to Christian marital law. Jacob b. Abraham Bassan granted the son the double portion, whether the children had already divided the inheritance or if the division had occurred in Portugal. An exception would be if the son had known the applicable law but voluntarily relinquished his rights. Notably, Bassan's historical perspective is intriguing. He refers to the original generation (erstes Geschlecht) that remained in Spain due to concerns about external wealth. Subsequent generations, he suggests, only had the opportunity to emigrate as adults but failed to seize that favorable chance.</text>

But when the boy grew up, he did not want to marry the girl and gave his father this waiver in writing. The father, who himself wanted to marry his niece, went with two witnesses to the brother, gave him a ring in the presence of the daughter and said: 'With this, the marriage of your daughter is concluded.' Then he first showed the waiver document of his son. Niece and brother disputed the legality of the marriage. Samuel de Salomo a'Cathan declares the marriage invalid. See 543. 3 pages.
