During the meal, a broken bone was found in one of the drumsticks, with the fracture visible. Samuel b. Salomo a'Cathan ruled, citing the book 'Beer Esek' by Sabbatai Beer Fonte (Resp. 8), that the break constituted an absolute Trefah (forbidden due to injury). Therefore, unless there were 60 chickens, all the chickens were prohibited for consumption. The cooking pots in which the chickens were prepared in individual households were also considered Trefah. These pots were forbidden for further use because the inquiry was made simultaneously for all the chickens. .</text>

News arrived of his death, and the father thanked God for it, bequeathing his entire fortune to strangers. Five years after the father's death, the son returned and demanded his inheritance. Jacob ben Abraham Bassan ruled that the son was entitled to the inheritance. However, if he remained unworthy, the Beth Din should provide him with a monthly or weekly amount sufficient for basic needs. If he denied God or any of the fundamental principles (Ikarim) of the Torah, he would receive nothing. Bassan mentioned that he would have liked to discuss the case more thoroughly, but his eye ailment prevented him from doing so. This ailment also caused the delay in releasing the responses.</text>

<text>A very devout man introduced strict practices and pious customs in his household, even though he knew they were not obligatory. He ensured that his children followed these practices joyfully during his lifetime and for many years after his death. However, when they reached marriageable age, they feared that adhering to these practices might cause conflicts with their spouses or new families. They asked whether they could be exempted from these self-imposed restrictions and pious customs. According to the ruling of the physician David ben Jacob de Meza, the children can annul their vows. However, for matters they believed to be obligatory rather than voluntary restrictions, they need not seek annulment. They can simply abandon these practices. See reference 284.</text>

When the cantor accepted a position at another synagogue, he vowed to assist the leaders of the first synagogue whenever needed. After a few years, he made a similar vow to the leaders of the second synagogue, promising to serve as a regular cantor there as long as it existed. Later, he wanted to assist the first synagogue again. Chija Cohen de Lara ruled that the cantor should observe fasting on Mondays and Thursdays as a penalty for violating the third commandment. [Note: The term 'fasting' refers specifically to Mondays and Thursdays, not the usual Monday, Thursday, and Monday. These are fasting days observed as a pious custom, not rabbinical law, after Passover and Sukkot.</text>

The guardian was also the sole witness regarding the loan. Jacob ben Abraham Bassan distinguishes three types of guardians: Those who received 2% to 3% of the orphans' income. Those who received a specific amount designated in the will. Those who served without compensation. Bassan explains that the testimony of the guardian is valid unless they belong to the first group. In that case, they must explicitly waive their compensation for their testimony to be valid. If the debtor swears that they have already repaid the deceased, they are exempt from payment. If this was not done, the animal was considered non-kosher. The chacham had exempted a particularly trustworthy shochet, A, from this obligation. After the chacham's death, a scholar, B, was appointed to make decisions regarding kosher and non-kosher matters until a new chacham arrived. B required A to show him the knife according to the custom. A continued to slaughter without showing the knife. B then declared all animals slaughtered by A as non-kosher. A contested this decision, arguing that B was not the local rabbi. Judah Piza decides that A is obliged to show the knife to B.</text>

In the foreign town, the woman passed away after about a month. Due to her estate, there was a dispute between the brothers and the husband; he had taken all the possessions into his house. The proof to the contrary lay with the brothers. Jacob Chiskijahu ben Chacham Israel Athias, referring to the responses of R. Salomo Hakohen, Part 3, Response 27, ruled in favor of the husband regarding the estate.</text>

The marriage had not been consummated, and no private time between husband and wife had occurred after the wedding. Unfortunately, the woman fell ill, and the journey had to be interrupted. In the foreign place, the woman died after about a month. Disputes arose between the brothers and the husband regarding her estate. The husband had taken all the property into his house. He claimed that during this time (on the journey), a private moment had occurred, which was likely. The burden of proof lay with the brothers. Jacob Chiskijahu ben Chacham Israel Athias ruled, following the responses of Rabbi Salomo Hakohen (Part 3, Response 27), that the estate should go to the husband.</text>

When the son learned of this, he went to the synagogue leader (Vorsteher des Hekdesch) and promised him the entire paternal inheritance without revealing his father's oath. After the son's death, the synagogue leader demanded the inheritance. Samuel ben Salomo a'Cathan ruled that due to the son's renunciation of enjoyment, he was not prohibited from transferring the inheritance to his sons, brothers, or the synagogue. In this case, he decided in accordance with Maimonides that the son was obligated to transfer his inheritance to the synagogue, and the father's oath did not prevent this. See reference 865.</text>

<text>A sold goods to B for 4,000 florins, receiving 2,000 florins in cash and a promissory note for the remainder. B, together with C, was involved in a joint venture. A was aware of this arrangement. In the venture, 3,000 florins were lost, and C fled after the failure, leaving his share in the hands of his wife. When the promissory note was due, A went to B and demanded payment. B refused to pay, arguing that he was only liable as a co-debtor with C if A could not recover anything from C. Therefore, B offered to pay 1,500 florins, which included 1,000 florins representing his contribution to the venture and an additional 500 florins, as he also had to bear half of the 3,000 florin loss, totaling 1,500 florins. However, C's wife refused to pay. The promissory note issued privately by B showed that it was a private matter of B. Jacob Chiskijahu ben Chacham David Israel Athias rules that B must pay the full amount.</text>

<text>A person named Jacob had two grandsons, both of whom had the same first name. He bequeathed 2000 fl. to "Jacob, the son of the elder son" - let's call him A. However, since the son of the younger son was the elder - let's call him B - and the Hebrew phrasing allows for interpreting it as "the elder son Jacob of my son," a dispute arose between the two cousins. Chija Cohen de Lara decides in favor of A, as the wording supports him and, additionally, it is customary to bequeath a little more to the elder son, even if he is not the firstborn. A statement from a man who had a joint business with B and testified that B should receive the 2000 fl. according to the testator's will would have no evidentiary value, as he has an interest in the outcome of the case for his own son. Regarding the theoretical question of how the case would stand if a household employee had made the same statement, de Lara decides that in that case, the money should be divided between the two grandsons.</text>
